Workshop: Taking Action to Shift International Public Finance from Fossil Fuels to Clean Energy
Arab Watch Coalition, organized on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, in partnership with the International Institute for Sustainable Development and The Big Shift Global, a Civil Society workshop: Taking Action to Shift International Public Finance from Fossil Fuels to Clean Energy. Arab Watch Coalition members and partners from the MENA region attended the workshop, which was moderated by the co-executive director of Arab Watch Coalition Shereen Talaat
The event presented the scientific model results regarding global fossil fuel use, the finance flows into the region for fossil fuels and clean energy and the opportunities for renewables in the Middle East and North Africa
Olivier Bois von Kursk from IISD presented statistics on gas and fuels emissions, and how to decarbonize energy systems in line with 1.5°C.
Bronwen Tucker from Oil Change International spoke on Public Finance donors and where the money is going. The speaker presented also a database on Public finance for energy.
Petr Hlobil from BankWatch Network described the energy policies of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and its strategy to stop funding Fossil fuels
Fran Witt, from Recourse, talked about the World Bank policies and spending in the MENA Region, and the safeguards and climate Policies.
And finally, Zeina Khalil Hajj, from 350 spoke on the Regional Fossil use and renewables opportunities
The participants interacted with the speakers and the presentations, by asking questions on funding fossil gas and fuels in the MENA region, and the challenges facing the shift to clean energy and renewables .
Arab Watch Coalition is preparing an hybrid event in the next month, to discuss more the issues raised in this workshop.
