Arab Watch Coalition: Democratizing Development Workshop

A 2-day workshop was held in Rabat for Moroccan civil society organization in June 17 & 18. The workshop entitled “Democratizing Development” was hosted and sponsored by Heinrich Boell Foundation.

Representatives of 14 Moroccan NGOs participated in the workshop. The goal of the workshop was to introduce the different entry points that civil society can use to get engaged with and hold IFIs, and the implementing agencies of their funded projects, accountable. Representatives from the IMF, the World Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development presented in the workshop and engaged in Q &As with the participants.

One of our AWC Egyptian board member was also invited to present a case study from Egypt. The case study was the complaint against Titan Cement Plant in Alexandria and the presentation covered the mobilization and organization of the local community to submit the complaint and prepare for the different steps throughout the investigation process, it also covers the use of national litigation processes.

The participants were impressed by this Egyptian expertise and expressed their enthusiasm to learn more from those experiences in other countries.

The participants expressed interest in monitoring some specific projects especially those in the sector of renewable energy and governance. Two of the governance projects funded by the World Bank are about promoting citizens’ participation in local governance at the municipalizes’ level.
