We Are Hiring! Environment Program Coordinator

We Are Hiring! Environment Program Coordinator

Introduction

The Arab region is one of the poorest regions in the world in terms of water resources. Besides climate change, mismanagement of water resources, inefficient irrigation methods, population growth, and urbanization put more strain on already limited water resources. Longer drought seasons and depleted water resources forced many agriculture workers in the region to migrate to urban areas for income. Countries in the region became increasingly dependent on imports to feed their people. With the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and the economic crisis, the issue of food security became a national security issue.

International Financial institutions (IFIs) are stepping up to face the food crisis. In mid-2022, many of these institutions developed an “IFI-Action Plan to Address Food Insecurity”. This plan outlines how each one of these institutions would respond to the crisis. While some of these commitments aim to provide financial support to the governments and corporations most impacted by the crisis, others are more directed toward projects linked to sustainable agriculture and food security like the World Bank, which committed $30 billion in response to the food crisis.

Some of these projects directed to sustainable agriculture and services extension to farmers have been announced in some countries in the Arab region. These projects promise to address climate change issues and the inefficient use of natural resources while providing job opportunities to vulnerable and marginalized groups such as refugees. Some are also geared toward enhancing the food supply chains and encouraging crop exportations to neighboring countries.

Given the importance of these projects, there is a great need to ensure that the adopted farming practices and crops are environmentally sustainable and that sound labor conditions are in place for the marginalized groups these projects would employ.

As a Coalition working on promoting participatory, just, inclusive, and equitable development programs and processes in the region, the Arab Watch Coalition (AWC) is hiring a Program Coordinator to lead its monitoring and advocacy work to ensure these sustainable agriculture projects are indeed achieving what they were designed to do.
